A wonderful middle-Byzantine stamp seal showing an interesting re-appropriation of a gem. Good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

While this stamp seal was produced during the Byzantine period, in the 9th century, the gem it contains is likely several centuries older, though the exact age is difficult to determine. Such reappropriations of gemstones are known, but this example is particularly elaborate and finely engraved. Clearly, Johannes was a wealthy individual, and his personal seal - likely worn around his neck - was crafted by a skilled silversmith.
